Matthew 6:16-18 (NIV)
16 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
During this time of Lent we give up certain things. They can range from many different things from, candy, soda, eating out, things we do, and so on and so on.. But why do we do this? In our verse today Jesus addresses those who fast, and really calls them out. He says “do not look somber as the hypocrites do”. Now their hearts are in the right place as far as seeking God in their life, but in practice they are only looking for man’s approval. They seek those who would say “look at them”. This totally portrays such a false relationship with God and in reality this is not good. Those type of actions are for self gain. When we truly celebrate Lent our fasting is between us and God, this will bring us closer to God because we will have to fully rely on him. In Our Journey With God, the goal is to have a better relationship with him. As you fast during Lent focus on the sufferings of Christ. Let us live for Christ, let us tell others what He has done for us.
Pray: Thank you Jesus for the suffering you took in my place. At the end of my life what was waiting for me was a life eternal in hell. But because you died on the cross for me, because you suffered for me, I now have a home in heaven. I could never repay you, but I will live my life as a sacrifice to you. Devoted to you faithfully, will tell others of Your Great Name! Amen.
